Tank, with a twist!

Description

While this Tank Must retains the stylistic codes of its solid gold predecessor, it breaks away in two distinctive ways. First, it differs through the use of vermeil (gold-plated silver) rather than solid gold. The Tank Must is also instantly recognisable for the originality of its dials. Moving away from the traditional combination of Roman numerals on a white dial, it offers a wide range of creative interpretations: lacquered versions, Arabic numerals, and others such as this one, featuring Cartier Roman numerals, a railway minute track and a champagne-toned dial.

What made the Tank a success remains unchanged, particularly its proportions. The medium size is ideal for a feminine wrist: perfectly balanced, it sits naturally on the wrist and becomes almost unnoticeable thanks to its discreet elegance.

Finally, this example belongs to the early generation of Tank Must watches, fitted with a mechanical movement that pays tribute to Cartier’s century-old watchmaking heritage.

Why did Françoise choose it?

Large, medium, small, solid gold, gold-plated, classic dial, lacquered colourful dial, leather strap in understated or bold tones... it does not matter: Françoise loves the Tank, every Tank. While she is particularly drawn to lacquered and colourful dials, she was immediately captivated by this piece, which brings together the best of both worlds: the accessible pricing of a Must, combined with the timeless perfection of Cartier’s Roman numeral dial.

The champagne dial is particularly appealing, shifting subtly between off-white and pale gold depending on the light.

Even though some might find it less practical for everyday use, Françoise appreciates the poetry of winding her watch every morning. It is a brief gesture, but one that creates a tangible, almost intimate connection with the watch. It also has the charm of revealing those moments when she has been so absent-minded that she has forgotten to wind it.

History

The first Tank, known as the Tank Normale, designed in 1917, was followed in 1922 by the Tank Louis Cartier, whose design has remained largely unchanged ever since.

The "Must de Cartier" collection was launched in 1973 by Robert Hocq and Alain-Dominique Perrin, who was appointed Managing Director of this new division. This creative line not only allowed Cartier to expand its offering, but also to introduce a more accessible and unconventional range, helping to democratised luxury while preserving the Maison’s core codes.

Following lighters, pens and leather goods, the Must watch line made its debut in 1976–77. The vermeil Tank was the first to appear bearing the "Must de Cartier" signature and the two intertwined "C"s on the dial. Although the earliest models were fitted with manual-wind movements, quartz quickly became the standard for these everyday, easy-to-wear watches.

Unlike Cartier’s yellow gold timepieces, the Must line in silver, vermeil or steel offered a wide variety of cases and dials. Sometimes colourful, sometimes adorned with geometric motifs, these designs brought a new vitality to the classic models. Its softer lines and reinterpreted design echo the Tank Louis Cartier with a twist.
