Must 21: a bold break within the Must collection
Description
The Cartier Must 21, with its steel case and deployant clasp, presents a confident new look. Strikingly original and sporty thanks to its dial combining steel with golden accents, it offers a compelling alternative to more classic, all-gold models. With its rounded lines, it embodies both the elegance and creativity of the Maison. A pared-back watch, defined by its white dial against which the blued hands stand out beautifully.
The Cartier Must 21 is first distinguished by its Roman numerals, not placed on the dial, but engraved directly into the bezel, creating a subtle play of light and volume. It then features a clean, plain white dial (available in several variations) discreetly signed “Must de Cartier.” Finally, the bracelet, almost integrated into the case, creates a strong visual harmony. Its flexibility and the slimness of the case make it particularly comfortable to wear.
Why did Françoise choose it?
Whether monochrome or adorned with geometric motifs, with or without numerals, small or large, there is always a Must watch that reflects your personality. This is why Françoise offers Must models with varied designs, more or less sporty in spirit. The Must 21 is not especially common, yet it is a singular model she wished to highlight. As its case is not crafted in precious metal, the Must 21 offers an elegant alternative to gold watches, combining boldness and refinement in a single piece. Worn on its steel bracelet, it can also be fitted with a leather strap, lending it an even more elegant look.
History
The “Must de Cartier” collection was launched in 1973 by Robert Hocq and Alain-Dominique Perrin, appointed Managing Director of this new entity.
This creative line allowed Cartier not only to expand its offerings but also to introduce a more accessible and unconventional range, helping to democratise luxury while preserving the Maison’s distinctive codes.
After lighters, pens and leather goods, the Must watch made its debut in 1976–77. The vermeil Tank was the first to appear, bearing the inscription “Must de Cartier” and the double “C” motif on the dial. While the earliest models were equipped with manual movements, quartz quickly became the standard for these easy-to-wear, everyday watches. The Must 21 was launched in 1986, modernising the Must line and embodying the spirit of the late 1980s and 1990s : a time when the watch became as much a fashion accessory as a timekeeping instrument.
