Our take
Our take
The missing link between Madonna, Margaret Thatcher and Keith Richards
Description
Cartier has always been a watchmaker of form and design. The bold (some might say daring) challenge of combining a very square case with rounded edges and finely articulated, elongated links could only be mastered by the Maison itself. The result was a resounding success, later interpreted in solid gold, gold and steel, steel, diamond-set versions, and across large and small sizes.
This version is perhaps the purest expression for a woman: 18-carat yellow gold, small size. A true jewel on the wrist.
The dial is also the purest, as in the earliest Panthère models released, with no date window. This small version is undeniably feminine -compared to the classic size often seen on both men’s and women’s wrists-, yet even more comfortable to wear than its larger counterpart (is that even possible?).
How to wear it?
Metal bracelet watches will always carry a sporty look. However, when that metal is gold and the bracelet is made up of such fine links, jewellery is never far away.
Françoise prefers to wear it in a very relaxed way, breaking up its jewellery-like appearance, as an everyday watch: it is a piece that finds its place anywhere.
Why did Françoise choose it?
If Françoise chose it, she is far from alone. It has been seen (and continues to be seen) on the wrists of many actresses, musicians and political figures. If there were one Cartier watch for life, it might well be the Panthère. The metal bracelet (whatever the version) offers outstanding durability and comfort. This smaller version remains more discreet than its counterparts, while still being crafted entirely in gold.
History
The Panthère watch was launched in the festive spirit of the 1980s, when Michèle Kaouni was Creative Director at Cartier. Its name comes from its bracelet: both supple and refined, it evokes the way the animal moves, with fluidity, elegance and sensuality. At Cartier, the panther motif is deeply rooted in the Maison’s identity. The spotted design first appeared on another women’s wristwatch in 1914, set with onyx and diamonds.
From its release, it was embraced by a wide and eclectic audience: Madonna, Keith Richards, Margaret Thatcher... Why not you?
