Santos-Dumont: back to the origins
Description
While we're now accustomed to the Santos design, we must still remember the small revolution that was the release of this first men's wristwatch at the beginning of the 20th century. A watch on the wrist! A square watch! A watch with sharp edges, with visible studs to hold and secure the crystal. This revolution was a success, since the Santos-Dumont is still in the Cartier catalog, 120 years later.
This version is undoubtedly one of the rarest and most precious. Most often made entirely of yellow gold, the Santos-Dumont has a relatively thick case. This is extra-thin, a testament to a design of great finesse, elegant lines and notable comfort. This is the large model: 27 x 36 mm, thus promising a real presence on a wrist, feminine or masculine. Of course, the movement is manual, like all the watches in the classic range (despite a few rare exceptions of self-winding movements) sold by Cartier in the 1970s.
The refined dial, true to the Cartier identity, remains the classic dial of the 1970s. Such a precious and rare watch would not be complete without its solid yellow gold folding clasp.
Why did Françoise choose it?
The Santos-Dumont is a piece of considerable importance for watchmaking and for Cartier. It represents the first wristwatch for men. It is also the first watch design by Louis Cartier, still in production more than 120 years later. While Françoise greatly appreciates the modernity and practicality of Santos watches with integrated bracelets, she has a particular respect and love for the ancient, yet contemporary design of the Santos-Dumont on a leather strap. Françoise could not miss an opportunity to offer you this rare version, which will find its place as an everyday watch as well as a piece in a larger collection.
History
Like the Tank, the Santos-Dumont is one of Cartier's legendary models. It was designed in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont. A watch capable of measuring the pilot's exploits. A pioneering watch, not only for aviation but also in the history of watchmaking: it was the first men's wristwatch. Most Santos-Dumont watches were sold in yellow gold. A few exist in white gold or platinum.
Since its introduction in 1911, the Santos model has continued to seduce and its success continues to grow, especially with the appearance of its sportier version: the Santos with an integrated bracelet. In its most classic version, the Santos-Dumont has undergone several variations in size, finesse, and movement.
