The mythical Santos with a twist!
Description
When one speaks of Cartier watchmaking, the Cartier Santos inevitably comes to mind. The first wristwatch launched by Cartier at the beginning of the 20th century, the Santos marked a true revolution: a watch worn on the wrist, a square case with sharply defined edges, visible screws securing the crystal from its commercial release in 1911. Its Art Deco spirit continues to captivate, making it a true must-have for any watch enthusiast.
In its Galbée version, here ref. 166930, the case is gently curved, making it particularly comfortable on the wrist. It sits naturally and follows its shape. This comfort is further enhanced by the original Cartier folding clasp.
While the Santos is often seen on a steel bracelet, here it is presented on a leather strap, softening its sporty aesthetic. It retains its elegance through its more compact dimensions, its signature white dial with Roman numerals, and the presence of a yellow gold bezel.
Why did Françoise choose it?
This Cartier Santos is truly ideal for everyday wear. It is the most classic configuration, where gold meets steel, a watch that pairs effortlessly with daily life. An essential model within the Cartier repertoire, it is as emblematic historically as it is stylistically. A piece that is both practical and refined, timeless yet discreet.
Of all the Santos watches Françoise has had the pleasure of wearing, the Galbée Lady stands out for its exceptional comfort. Its gently curved case back and smaller size fit the wrist perfectly. If it weren’t a Cartier, you might almost forget you were wearing it.
Thanks to its white dial, this Santos can be paired with a strap in any colour, according to your mood or the season.
History
Like the Cartier Tank, the Santos is one of Cartier’s most legendary creations. It was conceived in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, a watch designed to accompany and measure the pilot’s achievements.
A pioneering piece, not only for aviation but also in the history of watchmaking, it is considered the first men’s wristwatch. In the 1980s, the line evolved into two families: the Santos-Dumont, faithful to the original design, and the Santos, which embraced modernity with its integrated bracelet.
To this day, the Cartier Santos continues to be reinterpreted in numerous versions and enjoys enduring success.
