Changing the shape without changing the spirit
Description
Françoise is always amazed by the variations Cartier can create from a single design. The Maison often plays with shapes, colours or sizes while preserving the essence of a model and this piece is yet another example. Cartier has retained the geometric character and signature codes of the Santos while transitioning from a square to a round shape.
We find the signature screwed bezel on a steel case, the detail that contributed to the success of the Santos in the 1980s. For this rounded version reference 8192, Cartier plays with symmetry by distributing the screws in a subtly uneven pattern across the bezel. A design that is perhaps more discreet thanks to the steel, yet highly distinctive with its anthracite or “Ghost” dial.
The watch comes with its Cartier service pouch and its 1982 papers.
Why did Françoise choose it?
This all-steel Cartier Santos can be worn every day. A watch that embraces a sporty look while remaining elegant as every Cartier does. The flexibility of the bracelet and the slimness of the case make it extremely pleasant to wear. Françoise undoubtedly loves the Santos, an essential model in Cartier’s repertoire. This one revisits its signature codes "with a twist". Round sports watches at Cartier are not the most common and this Santos Vendôme “Ghost” is even rarer.
Françoise also enjoys offering watches with slightly larger diameters, such as this beautiful 33 mm version, which gives the Santos real wrist presence and suits both women’s and men’s wrists equally well.
History
Like the Tank, the Santos is one of Cartier’s legendary models. It was created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. A pioneering watch, not only for aviation, but for watchmaking history itself: it was the first men’s wristwatch, marketed in 1911.
In the 1980s, the collection split between the Santos-Dumont, which stayed true to the original design, and the Santos, updated with a more modern integrated bracelet. Even today, the Cartier Santos is available in numerous versions and continues to enjoy undeniable success.
