Description

Françoise never ceases to be impressed by the endless variations Cartier can create from a single design language. The Maison is known for playing with shapes, colours and proportions while always preserving its core identity. Here we see another clear example: Cartier retains the geometric spirit and signature codes of the Santos, while shifting from a square silhouette to a round case.

The gold-set insert mounted on a steel case echoes the design that made the Santos so successful in the 1980s. In this more rounded interpretation, Cartier introduces a subtle play on symmetry, with the studs on the bezel arranged in a slightly irregular rhythm.

Why did Françoise choose it?

This gold and steel Cartier Santos can be worn every day. It carries a sporty aesthetic while remaining unmistakably elegant, as only Cartier can achieve. The steel bracelet and slim case make it particularly comfortable on the wrist. Without question, Françoise is drawn to the Santos, a cornerstone of the Cartier collection. This version revisits its codes with a twist. Round sports-oriented Cartier watches are relatively uncommon, which adds to its appeal. She also appreciates offering slightly larger diameters; here, a confident 33 mm gives the watch real presence on the wrist, making it suitable for both men’s and women’s wrists.

History

Alongside the Tank, the Santos is one of Cartier’s most iconic models. It was designed in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. A pioneering watch not only for aviation but also in horological history: it was the first men’s wristwatch, commercially released in 1911. In the 1980s, the line split into the Santos-Dumont, faithful to the original design, and the Santos, which embraced modernity through its integrated bracelet. Today, the Cartier Santos continues to be produced in numerous variations and remains an enduring success.
