The origin of an icon

Description

At the beginning, there was the Cartier Tank Normale: a clean, geometric design, almost architectural. Introduced in 1917, it ushered in a new era, immediately establishing a radically different style, far removed from the round watches that dominated at the time.

You may be more familiar with its most renowned successor, the Tank Louis Cartier. The Tank Normale features a rectangular, almost square, case defined by strong lines and two perfectly parallel brancards. Its design evokes the tracks of the Renault FT-17 tanks used during the First World War, an unexpected source of inspiration that would become a true watchmaking signature.

The dial offers excellent legibility, displaying Cartier’s signature codes: black Roman numerals, a railway minute track, blued steel hands and a crown set with a sapphire cabochon.

This is the medium model, appealing to connoisseurs as it houses a manual movement and features a "Paris" dial, the Maison’s discreet signature indicating Parisian manufacture.

The watch is fitted with a brown alligator leather strap and a gold-plated Cartier pin buckle. It will appeal to those who favour slim watches that follow the natural lines of the wrist. Thanks to its white dial, it can be paired with a strap in any colour, depending on mood or season.

A discreet and refined timepiece, ideal for everyday wear.

Why did Françoise choose it?

Because the Tank Normale is the origin of an entire collection that continues to endure today. It is a manifesto watch, almost conceptual, one that transcends decades without ever losing its strength.

It is also a collector’s piece, rarer than the Tank Louis. If you are looking for a distinctive Tank, one that stands apart from those of your friends, the Tank Normale is the perfect choice.

And of course, it is the watch worn by Jackie Kennedy… how could one resist?

History

The Tank Normale is the very first interpretation of the Tank collection, imagined by Louis Cartier in 1917. The first example was presented in 1918 to General John Pershing, a symbolic gesture that firmly anchored the watch in its time. It was conceived in tribute to the heroes of the First World War, its design inspired by the earliest military tanks.

Produced from 1919 onwards, it marked a major aesthetic departure. At a time when watchmaking still favoured round and decorative forms, Cartier introduced a watch conceived as a modern design object, influenced by architecture and industrialisation.

Over the decades, the Tank Normale has remained the most faithful expression of the original intention. It gave rise to numerous variations, including the Tank Cintrée, Tank Louis and Tank Américaine, all rooted in this initial design. Five years later, the Tank Louis Cartier was introduced, closely resembling the original but with a more elongated dial and finer, more rounded brancards. Successive generations have preserved these defining codes while adapting to evolving watchmaking technologies such as quartz movements.

Long produced in limited quantities, the Tank Normale retains a particular aura among discerning collectors today, who are drawn to its radical design and historical purity.
