The Air King line was launched to honor the exploits of English Pilots during World War II. It quickly became the typical and simplest Rolex : waterproof, automatic, practical with clean and simple dials. The 5500 reference was such a success for Rolex that they kept it for 37 years in production. The reference 14000 took over the 5500, bringing modernity to the line and confirmed Rolex as the the king of watchmakers.
